In the mood for some randomness today using my macro lens—a vintage pocket watch face, some tiny acorns, water running from my bathroom faucet (looks like an icicle), and today’s temperature on my desktop computer screen (maybe I could’ve fried that egg on the sidewalk today).  We are supposed to get some rain from the tropical storm in the Gulf and much cooler temperatures.  All I can say is bring it on!

Day Two Hundred Forty Five 2011

I told my Grandpeeps, Shelby and Elijah, this afternoon that there is an old saying that goes, "It's so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk." Since it was a blistering 98 degrees outside today, I thought we'd put that saying to the test. The Grandpeeps thought I was nuts when I told them what I wanted to do. But they happily went along with it. So we gathered the tools for our little experiment--a paper plate (to put the fried egg on in case it indeed did fry), a spatula to flip the egg on the hot sidewalk, the egg, of course, and a little bit of some non-stick spray to keep the egg from sticking to the concrete.
I cracked the egg on the hot sidewalk and you can imagine our disappointment when it didn't start to cook. It sort of slid around like a jellyfish on oil. Elijah wanted to try to flip it, so he scooped it onto the spatula and it immediately oozed through the spatula slots.
I think if we had left it there long enough, it might actually have cooked a little around the edges, but, alas, our experiment was a failure, but I guess we did disprove the old saying--or maybe 98 degrees just isn't hot enough to fry an egg on a sidewalk. The kids quickly got bored with the whole mess. I got the hose and washed the goo off the sidewalk, and while I was at it, watered the crispy, wilted plants in my front yard. (BTW and FYI, the last time it was this hot here in middle Tennessee was in 1925). Happy TGIF, everyone!

Day Two Hundred Forty Four 2011

I’m wondering if it’s ever going to rain again. We’ve got curled up brown leaves like this one all over our yard. Three more weeks until Autumn begins. Happy September, everyone!

Day Two Hundred Forty Two 2011

Grandson Elijah played game one of Fall Ball T-Ball this evening. His team is the Braves. They play for one hour and, for some reason this time around, they don't keep score. It's just for fun. Elijah plays short stop which means he gets to be in the dirt instead of the grass. He did a great job batting and fielding and gets to see a lot more action as a short stop. And he's very proud of his new cleats (he
wanted to wear them to school today). Good game, Elijah!
