Day One Hundred Two 2013

Trying a new recipe ~ Hearty Beef and Barley Soup in the Crockpot

I bought a very small bag of pearled barley (I want to say ‘Pearl Bailey’ ~ if you’re under the age of 50, you have no idea who I’m talking about ~ anyway ~ I digress) because, let’s face it, who cooks with barley? Not I. But the soup recipe called for it ~ three-fourths of a cup. Lots left, of course. I put the rest of it in this vintage freezer Ball jar. I collect old jars. This one’s pretty rare.

One of the reasons I bought that jar is because of the galvanized lid. The original owner (I’m assuming) apparently put up some cherries and wrote the date on the lid ~ which dates back (way back) to when I was but a sixteen month old baby. Pretty cool. And old.

Neil took the day off to do some much-needed yard work. He bought a couple of truck loads of black mulch and spent most of the day spreading it, which will (we hope) look good and keep the weeds at bay.

Couldn’t have asked for a more awesome day which was a cool-ish 60 degrees. Felt more like spring after the eighty degree heat wave this past week. The rain yesterday evening washed away some of the pollen, thank you very much.

The strong wind yesterday blew petals from our cherry trees around like pink snow ~ a very pretty sight to see but wish they’d stay on the trees a bit longer.

Grandson Elijah after school. He was thrilled that it’s Friday and did a happy dance when he got inside the house.
Elijah Shelby Neil at Mae Pearl's
Grandpa Neil, granddaughter Shelby and grandson Elijah (and moi) treated ourselves to some Mae Pearl’s frozen yogurt. Elijah got a brain freeze.

This is a terrible washed out picture, but the Hearty Beef and Barley Soup turned out great and was pretty tasty. Barley adds an interesting texture and flavor. We’ll have it again. Leftovers, you know.

Day Ninety Eight 2011

THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY!

Elijah waited for his sister Shelby after school with two Kit Kat bars melting in his sweaty little hands--one for him, one for her. When he realized they were melting, he ran inside and put them in the freezer and came running back, all out of breath, so he could be there to greet her.

Did you jump for joy because it's Friday? Happy TGIF, everyone, and happy weekend!

Day Ninety Four 2011

Grandson Elijah and I caught a little jump time on the trampoline this afternoon right before the storms came through.

"No more pictures!" He thinks if he hides his face, I can't take his picture. He don't know me very well, do he?

Gratuitous posed picture of cute grand kid. He's wearing his new T Ball cap and shirt. His team is the Muck Dogs sponsored by Hidden Hollow. He says practice is hard, not fun, and boring. That's what video games do to a kid, I guess. Anyway, let the games begin! In about a week.

He really wanted this tulip for his mom, so I cut the two yellow ones we have in the yard, figuring the wind and rain would destroy them. Put them in a glass with water and brought them inside. He forgot to give them to his mom after all. Oh well. Tomorrow is another day. (God willing!)

Day Fifty Two 2011

Yesterday the twig was brown and bare;
To-day the glint of green is there;
Tomorrow will be leaflets spare;
I know no thing so wondrous fair,
No miracle so strangely rare.
I wonder what will next be there!

Tulip sprouts are popping up in my backyard. Don't they know it's still winter?

Day One Hundred Seven

One Last Tulip Picture

Beautiful Saturday. Threat of a freeze tonight. Neil planted some flowering things today, so we covered those up, just in case. He says a freeze won't hurt the Tulips. They won't last much longer anyway. So, here's one last Tulip picture.
