The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy.
~John F. Kennedy
A dreary day of sad remembrance on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. If you happened to be alive on that day back in 1963 and were over the age of five, you probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news of his death. My memory is much the same as most school kids back then. I was 10 years old, sitting with my classmates at Capshaw Elementary School, working on our language assignment in Mrs. Bilbrey’s 5th grade classroom. The principal came on the intercom and announced that the president had been shot and had died. I don’t remember his exact words. I do remember feeling shocked and scared and watching my teacher’s face fill with sorrow. She took off her glasses and put a hand over her face. We didn’t get out of school early. I remember recess later and sitting on the jungle gym with other classmates and talking about what had happened. I have no idea what we said. Life moves on pretty quickly when you’re ten. We watched his funeral on TV. Felt so sad for his pretty wife and two little children. One thousand days in office. Did he make a positive difference while he was president? Yes. Was America better off after he died? Probably not.

Day Seventy Seven 2013
"March bustles in on windy feet
And sweeps my doorstep and my street.
She washes and cleans with pounding rains,
Scrubbing the earth of winter stains.
She shakes the grime from carpet green
Till naught but fresh new blades are seen.
Then, house in order, all neat as a pin,
She ushers gentle springtime in."

Day Three Hundred Forty One 2012
“May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow. May the soft winds freshen your spirit. May the sunshine brighten your heart. May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you, and may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.”
~Irish Blessing
(And may your runny nose have a short life in this cold and flu season. I’m just saying.)

Day Seventeen 2012
My house looks like it's under water. We did get soaked today as a strong cold front pushed through here. Thankfully for us, there were no severe storms like some endured. I think the Farmer's Almanac predicted a mild, wet winter for the south. I'm loving the mild, but I can do without all this wet. The sun'll come out....tomorrow?

Day Three Hundred Forty Six 2011
What happened to the forecast of sunshine today? It’s been overcast and cold all day, and then the rains came down after lunch time. The Cookeville Christmas parade—twice rescheduled because of rain the past two Mondays—will go on as planned for this evening in spite of the soggy conditions. It’s now or never. We’re running out of Mondays between now and Christmas. (And please don’t ask me why the town can’t have the parade on any other day of the week…..)

Day Three Hundred Thirteen 2011
"There is music in the meadows, in the air --
Autumn is here;
Skies are gray, but hearts are mellow,
Leaves are crimson, brown, and yellow;
Pines are soughing, birches stir,
And the Gipsy trail is fresh beneath the fir.
There is rhythm in the woods, and in the fields,
Nature yields:
And the harvest voices crying,
Blend with Autumn zephyrs sighing;
Tone and color, frost and fire,
Wings the nocturne Nature plays upon her lyre."
- William Stanley Braithwaite, Lyric of Autumn

Day Eighteen 2011
Today was one of those raindrops keep falling on my head kind of days here in the middle of Tennessee. But I kind of like it better than snow at the moment. The Farmer's Almanac suggested that our winter would be warm and wet. They got one half of their prediction correct. Looks like more wet on the way in the form of snow by week's end.

Day One Hundred Seventy Five 2010
Relief
Finally, some much needed rain around lunch time today. It blew in and back out pretty quickly, but it dropped the temperature enough to feel a big difference from the oppressive almost 100 degree heat we've been enduring the past several days.
