Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one's very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

Day Three Hundred Eight 2013

“Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker.”   ~Charles M. Schulz

1104131029d
There is not a child on this planet who can resist jumping into a pile of Autumn leaves. Grandson Knox had a great time this morning doing just that. Mostly, he liked slogging through the pile and picking up armloads of the leaves and throwing them. No wet suckers involved. Just a ton o’ fun.

Day Three Hundred Five 2013

Hello, November!  TGIF Randomness

Grandson Knox browsing in the clothing store after lunch today ~ needed some new stylin duds to wear for his upcoming 2 year photo shoot.

Put a hat on his head and his first reaction is to take it off even though he looks great in a hat

“October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Grandson Elijah’s second grade class had their ‘Harvest’ party today [whatever that is ~ they don’t have Halloween parties anymore in school and heaven forbid you should wear your costume ~ so the day after Halloween they had a ‘Harvest’ party ~ which sounds more pagan-like to me than Halloween] They got to dress up these little gourds. Elijah dressed his like a character in the movie ‘Avatar’. I said maybe he should have painted his gourd blue. Cute.

Elijah got this award today at school for displaying the 3 R’s ~ Ready, Responsible, Respectful which makes him a Super Student and an Awesome Kid! Way to go, Elijah!

“Come, little leaves” said the wind one day,
“Come over the meadows with me, and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold;
Summer is gone, and the days grow cold.”

Daughter Kelly and her hubs Kerry and son Knox moved here this past week, although they’re not quite ready to inhabit their new/old house yet. Lots of boxes to unpack and organizing/cleaning to do. Their house, on the left in this picture, was built in 1913 which makes it 100 years old this year. They’re staying with Neil and me for a while. Their house is just around the corner from us. We walked down there late this afternoon to feed the kitties [and locate the coffee maker ~ Kelly has to be there early tomorrow morning to wait for the Direct TV guy to come hook up their TV ~ and coffee is a must].

“November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.”

The leaves in my neck of the woods seem to be taking their time changing colors. That’s OK. Once they turn, they fall. I’m so not looking forward to bare tree season.

Day Two Hundred Eighty Five 2013

IMG_1858
This is my favorite time of year, and it seems to be happening without me. Or maybe I haven’t been paying attention lately. Neil and I were out on the deck eating some lunch, and I looked up at the beautiful blue sky and was surprised to find that the leaves at the top of our Red Maple are turning….wait for it….red! Guess I’d better get my Autumn mojo on and start paying attention, or I’m going to miss it.

We try to walk every day ~ mostly for any amount of time my decrepit knee will allow ~ look at all those leaves ~ you’d think it was Fall
0920131813a
Moving right along~ creepy picture ~ my toes look freakishly long ~ weird, huh? I was prepared to do another lap around the block, but Neil wimped out on me after only ten minutes
0920131845
I tend to pick up things that catch my eye when we walk ~ like these little acorns ~ I’m a little nutty that way ~ Happy TGIF, y’all!

The leaves at the top of the Red Maple in our back yard are starting to turn. Not sure whether to be glad or sad. I guess I feel a little of both.

How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days.   ~John Burroughs

Day Two Hundred Nine 2012

"Every leaf on every tree
And every drop of water in the sea
Every grain of weathered sand
That smashes itself onto dry land
Every stone and every petal, everything that's elemental
You are never gone."
~Jann Arden

Day Two Hundred Thirty Nine 2011

I love macro photography. A really good, really expensive macro lens is on my wish list (are ya listenin', Santa?). Recently, I was browsing lenses on Amazon.com and found a couple of really inexpensive macro and fish eye lenses from 47th Street Photo in Brooklyn, NY. They came in today and I've had some fun experimenting with in your face photography. (And a little fish eye lens photos just for fun.) For instance, I did not realize that Geranium leaves have hair. Those ants crawling around on that dead leaf (man, we need some rain!) were minuscule, and that ornate skeleton key is teeny tiny. And that red knobby thing is one of my little hobnail votives. It's more fun than a human being should be allowed to have with a digital camera.
